Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 7 Loyola drops two Saturday

The Wolf Pack and St. Thomas will conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 7-ranked Loyola University New Orleans baseball team continued its series with (RV) St. Thomas (Fla.) on Saturday, losing two games, 7-4 and 11-1. The two will meet back up on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the series finale.

Game 1: (RV) St. Thomas 7, #7 Loyola 4 (7)

The Bobcats built an early 4-0 lead after their first two at-bats, but the Wolf Pack scored three in the third and one more in the sixth to tie the game.

Jaxon Buratt got the rally going in the third with a one-out single, and after stealing second, he scored when Ayden Authement doubled to center. Walks for JJ Garcia and Nathan McDonald got the bases loaded, and Jordan McKenzie was hit by a pitch to cut the deficit down to two, 4-2. A walk for Jed Cambre scored another, 4-3.

A Drew Lee solo home run in the sixth tied the game, but St. Thomas got a walk-off three-run home run in the seventh to end the game, 7-4.

Michael Hotard gave up the four early runs, but settled in nicely to keep the Bobcats off the board for his final three frames. He struck out five throughout his outing.

Game 2: (RV) St. Thomas 11, #7 Loyola 1 (7)

After STU scored one in the first inning, the Wolf Pack tied the game with a run in the top of the second. Jordan McKenzie got things going with an infield single and an error that allowed him to reach second. After moving to third on a passed ball, he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lee.

The Bobcats, however, scored seven runs in the home half of the frame to take command of the game, 8-1. On the other side, Loyola grounded into a double play in the third, left the bases loaded in the fifth, and stranded a base runner in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Meanwhile, St. Thomas scored one in the fifth and another in the seventh to end the game.
