More than 200 student-athletes were honored for their success in the classroom

4/21/2023 12:14:00 PM

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans Athletics Department hosted its 19th annual Scholar-Athlete Ceremony on Tuesday, honoring 216 student-athletes for their success in the classroom in 2022. To be eligible for the recognition, Loyola student-athletes must have recorded a grade-point average of 3.0 or better during the two semesters in 2022, earned NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete status, or graduate this spring.

"Once again our student athletes had an extraordinary year in the classroom," Loyola Director of Athletics Brett Simpson said. "We are so proud of their accomplishments and they continue to exceed our expectations as scholar athletes. We are also grateful to our faculty, staff, and coaches who support them and make academic success a priority."

A total of 198 student-athletes received either gold (4.0 GPA), silver (3.50-3.99) or bronze (3.00-3.49) status from Loyola, 74 were recognized by the NAIA as Scholar Athletes, and 59 are in line to graduate in May.

The ceremony started with a brief introduction by Simpson and an invocation by Loyola Interim President Justin Daffron, S.J. Dr. Michael Capella (College of Business, Dean), Dr. Maria Calzada (College of Arts and Sciences, Dean), Dr. Michelle Collins (College of Nursing and Health, Dean) and Kern Mass (College of Music and Media, Dean) presented the Scholar-Athlete awards, Dr. Alicia Bourque (Vice President of Student Affairs) honored the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Teams, Dr. Tanuja Singh (Provost) handed out the Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards, and Father Daffron passed out the graduation stoles. Gregg Grovenburg, S.J. closed the ceremony with a benediction.

A total of 88 student-athletes earned bronze status, 98 were silver, and 19 had a perfect 4.0 GPA to gain gold. Ninety-eight student-athletes represented the College of Arts and Sciences, 70 were from the College of Business, 27 came from the College of Music and Media, and three were in the College of Nursing.

Loyola's 74 NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes and 59 graduates were both program highs as well.
